Types of Certification schemes


There are two types of schemes which cover both the Design and Construction of a building. Five schemes have so far been approved and listed below are details of the schemes and the Scheme Provider(s) delivering them:

1.    Certification of Design (Building Structures)

A Chartered Structural or Civil Engineer will certify the structural design of new buildings or alterations and extensions to existing buildings.

2.    Certification of Design (Section 6 – Energy) for Domestic Buildings

A qualified energy design professional will certify the energy design of your domestic building to ensure it will be energy efficient with low carbon emissions.

The Scheme Providers are Building Research Establishment (BRE) and The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) and further information about the scheme and how to apply for membership can be found on their websites at www.bre.co.uk/acd  and https://rias-regs.co.uk/


3.    Certification of Design (Section 6 – Energy) for Non-Domestic Buildings

A qualified energy design professional will certify the energy design of your non-domestic building to ensure it will be energy efficient with low carbon emissions.

4.    Certification of Construction (Electrical Installations to BS 7671)

A trained and qualified electrician will do the electrical installation work ensuring it is safe and meets both the building regulations and British Standard BS 7671.

5.    Certification of Construction (Drainage, Heating and Plumbing)

A trained and qualified plumber will carry out work on drainage, installation of heating systems and installation of certain micro-generation systems ensuring the work complies with building regulations and the applicable British Standards.
