The Building (Scotland) Act 2003 established a role for suitably qualified building professionals to accept responsibility for ensuring that certain design or construction work complies with the building regulations. To be an Approved Certifier you must belong to an approved scheme and meet the standards agreed with the Scottish Government Building Standards Division (BSD). You must also be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of building regulations. Building professionals, such as architects, engineers, electricians and plumbers who can demonstrate they have the appropriate qualifications and experience for the role can join a relevant certification scheme as an Approved Certifier.
Membership of a scheme is open to any individual or firm that meets the entry criteria and is not conditional on being a member of any trade association or professional institution. The criteria for membership vary between different schemes depending on the scope of work to be certified. To join a scheme contact the appropriate scheme provider for full details of the work covered by the scheme, the entry requirements and application form. Contact details for each of the scheme providers are available from their websites. Links to scheme providers are available here.
